Web developer a Linux user

It may sound like closing outdoor cushions when we speak about Linux users – Geek. Majority computer users still thought about Linux as a command-based system, that they may lost in the middle of booting the computer. That’s so wrong and I would like to give some correction on this matter.

Ubuntu

One of my favourite Linux distro is none other than ubuntu. I have been and still encourage those office-use computer to install on it. It’s free, it runs well in some old computer (save money in long-run) and it is stable. As for my profession as a web developer, it helps on my testing too.

Web design ubuntu

I almost can’t believe myself when I first doing a web design for a client back then. I used the pre-installed image manipulation software GIMP to do it. Here are a few things I need to emphasize on…

Stable server

Not only you don’t need to worry about viruses, marewares or even trojan. You don’t have to worry about the localhost too. In Windows or Mac, you may need to install a third party program. While in Linux, it has almost build it on running .php :) Somehow, all my websites and client’s sites are hosted on a Linux machine, that make me easier to test the site locally before launching the sites.

Do more

Ubuntu has most applications installed. A browser, email client, GIMP and text/code editor. It’s all there, without any program to be installed. No worries about viruses, no need of installation again, that definitely save a lot of time and let me work on more important stuff.

However, web design is still my first priority job. Photoshop CS3 has been a good companion compare to GIMP. Ubuntu, see you in my next netbook ;)

Logo changed, but does others change too?

Ubuntu, one of the famous Linux distort at the moment, just made some changes on their logo :) It seems like human growth hormone is getting up and sound promising, with the later released LTS (Long Term Support)

However, I used Ubuntu since 5 something, until recently 9.10… Still very disappointed with the boot up speed :P

Like all those rumor around the Internet, Ubuntu is starting to make money from the users. From the storage to now, the music store. Well, not much of my field. All I am waiting for are just 2 things, very simple, 1, Adobe to be port into Linux distort; 2, Faster boot up time.

Ubuntu logo

Looking back, Ubuntu seems like getting mature with its system. I did use Ubuntu for several month even though I am in web design, but mainly on coding. I somehow going to meet with some design someday, that is the day I am headache when I was with Ubuntu, which makes me take the move to Windows 7 instead.

Server, Web app and task

Few months back, I got a call from a client (who is also a friend). He is looking for an online printing business. Things like printing business cards, vouchers, promotional umbrellas and etc. Well, I did not charge as much as I should or usually do, looking at the angle that he is, after all, a friend.

Server

Now, since I’m a web designer in this one, I outsourced the back-end and come back to front-end this few weeks. We are heading to the finishing though, the biggest problem now is… VPS – Virtual Private Server.

I proposed a Dedicated Server before, however, due to the budget, they choose to go with VPS. However, the question is this: How to control a VPS?

As far as I am clear with is that, there is option to install Ubuntu server, which I am familiar working with. What I am troubling to see is, how do I taking the full control over the server itself…

Doing design in Ubuntu

Just when I thought I couldn’t do good design without Adobe Photoshop, this morning, I proved myself wrong :)
We design in Ubuntu on GIMP
I told myself to learn it few months back, but I didn’t get the chance. Mainly because I got other stuffs to do and I have a Macbook with Photoshop installed with me. So the first reaction when encountering design was “What the heck, just go to Macbook“. Then today, I don’t have Macbook or any Windows system, has been purely depending on my Ubuntu system.

I must say, the process is quite time taking. Design a simple site can take up 2 hours, not to mention some element is almost impossible to create, but I still able to create a satisfaction design though. Have to polish up and push myself to work with GIMP for a little while :) Gonna save my resources next time.

Hanging on the forum

I find myself hanging on forum a lot recently. Not only in Ubuntu support forum, but on others IT, gadget and web related forum. Not to say that I am free, instead, I am too busy working on both my lappie and my web.

First off, the IE6 and the new IE6 a.k.a Google Chrome. Both are driving my crazy already, can’t believe Google Chrome also coming out a headache now, seriously, Microsoft and Google should take a DNA testing to see if they’re brothers or not. As the client test the site on all browsers and I still can’t quite figure out how to solve them. How I wish it was the “”table” century right now, it would be way easier to code already!
No to IE6
I still can’t understand why would one still using IE6, since it is slow and so out-dated. I’m not complaining that it taking my time, I was paid to do so. IE6 is more than 10 years old and it is slow on either loading or even worse, scrolling down on a flash website.

Then I have some problem with the lappie. Not exactly a serious one, but a minor one – Installing IE6. Correct! I find out that I can actually install IE6 on Ubuntu. Following a few simple steps on IEs4Linux, and you’re good to go.
IEs4Linux installation
However, I got a lot of crash on installation, but don’t give up, give it a few tries and it should work. Somehow, I can’t get IE7 to work well in Ubuntu (there is option to install IE7 on “Advance” tab), good luck on installing and debugging IE6 :)
