A few months back, while I finished a project for a client, he asked me about how to go about the advertising the web.

There are, of course, a lot of way to get publicity on the net. From paid web directory to social media (Facebook, Twitter etc). However, for a starter, as a weblog only. It will be best to start off with social media, because it is free.

After all the invention like YouTube, Flickr, Social network and etc, the whole advertising changed. Here is the case study I studied back in 2006.

BMW ran a series of TV commercial, that need to speed their product. However, in certain country, there is limit on vehicle speed in TV commercial (I know, it’s weird). So BMW spend all their budget onto celebrities like Madonna, make a 5 minutes or more for each TV commercial and post online, one their BMW website and YouTube, then sell it on DVD.
How many times do we see consumers buying TV commercial to watch?

Social media advertising is a hot topic nowadays. A lot of agencies themselves also looking for ways to sneak into the circle. That probably tells us how important it is to have “free” advertisement knowledge online.

P/S: Something personal. Just a question though, if a client pay millions of dollar for agency and the agency found a way to promote the whole campaign online free of charge. Does those millions of dollar belongs to the agency?

Well, I got an email from a client telling me something is wrong in IE9 Preview. I was shocked that some how, some users are so keen about IE9 development progress.

In all unwillingness, I downloaded and installed the piece of software, hoping that it will work much better. Well, it did

Put away the crash that happen so often (it is a beta preview after all), the developer tools is definitely an improvement on IE. Especially it works much better than Google Chrome, seriously!

Finally Microsoft put a doorbell button on the door and ring all the developers

My concern about border-radius is end! IE9 support it and not only that, IE9 also support some HTML5 element.

However, we as the web designers and developers, shouldn’t be too happy with it. It is merely means another modern browser and does not solve the IE6 user base Of course the IE6 funeral is just a joke. There are majority of users still with IE6, either because they are running Windows 98 or Windows ME (believe me, I saw those operating system in some office), or some software are depending on them. Might need a few more years before the real end of IE6.

Things like printing business cards, vouchers, promotional umbrellas and etc. Well, I did not charge as much as I should or usually do, looking at the angle that he is, after all, a friend.

Now, since I’m a web designer in this one, I outsourced the back-end and come back to front-end this few weeks. We are heading to the finishing though, the biggest problem now is… VPS – Virtual Private Server.

I proposed a Dedicated Server before, however, due to the budget, they choose to go with VPS. However, the question is this: How to control a VPS?

As far as I am clear with is that, there is option to install Ubuntu server, which I am familiar working with. What I am troubling to see is, how do I taking the full control over the server itself…

A small town, living a population of only 20,000. Having 4 shopping complex, and they all selling pirated softwares, music, movies you-name-it. Yet, they are all free to sell for the past 20 years. Yes, 20 freaking years, without a problem.

That, my friend, is where I am living now.

Those CDs are just like some glossary or incontinence products everywhere. Everyone buying and selling it and yet no action was taken.

Now, I am not supporting pirated though. But at least try to get some software your own instead of getting a pirated one.

I did use some pirated softwares, but I am not encourage anyone else to do the same. But why? It is either the softwares are way too expensive for me, or I’m just going to use it for like… 2 times? Why both to get the license for hundred of dollar when I only going to use it for 2 times right?

Of course, the same thing applied to the action. I believe that to beat the piracy, it is all depend on the buyers, not the government or the organization though. Those laws are mainly scare a little off, but not the full cure. It’s the buyers who are the only core to stop piracy.

It’s the second week I’m back to my in-laws. Things are getting pretty… Tough and hot now.

Getting fat and lazy

Well, not exactly lazy, just the same though. But definitely getting some fat here. I don’t think Fastin diet pill could help me anymore. Gonna work something out soon

Weather and environment

Not sure why, the weather seems to be hot, terribly hot comparing to my own home. Well, I’ll take it as a sauna and burning fat, which unfortunately, didn’t work out well though

More pending task

Seriously, more and more tasks are around my desk. Not sure how to solve them now. Almost 2 weeks now, I’m busy becoming a driver instead. Didn’t really have the time to work on my job, unless at night, from 8.30pm to 11.30pm, then woke up early again to start another hectic day. Well, at least, productive?

Sigh… More task to go and I’m still here blogging! There will be another 2 weeks before I’m heading home…

Many have came to IE6 funeral on 1st of March 2010.

Imagine everyone, web designer majority, came with all their tuxedos on, have the happiest face they ever have had. That is how the funeral looks like.

Anyway speaking of IE6, there are lots of memories to talk about. Here are what we did together…

Geocities

Before web, I was a mIRC geek Long after mIRC, it seems that everyone has a IRC channel website, which prompted me to learn web design with, Geocities

Table and more table

After a few month fooling around with Geocities WYSIWYG system, I finally took the time to learn about HTML, which is all about… Table. I still remember how I struggle to remember what tr and td do… Until I found out Microsoft Frontpage was a great tools dealing with all the table It was HTML 1.0 and 2.0 back then.

Firefox

Well, all thanks to IE6 then I finally found Firefox an alternative that works pretty damn well. Especially on the security wise. Back then, IE6 doesn’t block pop-up and very easily got into malware and adware, which I ended up formated my computer, which running Windows 98 back then, it was easy to install the whole system though, taking that the drivers aren’t that much back then.

Hopefully, IE6 percentage will come down soon. As I checked the stat IE6 taking 40% of overall 100% IE browsers Well, I don’t support IE6 nowadays anyway…

Well, the anger burst and HTC getting the lawsuit… Of course, Google is backing up HTC for they are Android biggest manufacture as well as helping them developing Android.

Like usual, before Microsoft even have the time to release for sell, their OEM copy already been cracked and sell on the pirate market. Of course, we can’t blame it to Microsoft for their deal with Asus and Acer for they are among the first to release OEM Windows 7 on their machine.

However, recently Microsoft taking the step on this pirate copy. Microsoft going to release an update (I’m sure it will be one of the important update) to target the activation hack.

Sad thing, it is going to happen like how Windows XP activation. On the first day of the update release, hackers will find a way to know which update to void and how to activate it and install the next update.

This is the war Microsoft has been fighting with hackers around the World. My opinion? Good luck

Well, surely you do miss something out when you’re freelancing at home or office. Due to the wide area to be taken care of, little thing like insurance, contract or even tax are always one that is missing in the list of a freelancer. Well, my wife and I are both freelancing at home, so we divided jobs among us, so I’m kind of free from some missing list

Insurance

We are not disable, so there is not much of benefit we are getting like social security disability insurance that helps disable in medical care. Most freelance job require sitting in front of computer, some serious injuries are often a common illness. My wife and I finally get our medical card Did you forgot about this, since you’ve been sitting there for day long?

Contract

Contract is like a protection to a freelancer. It surely the best way if you found a long-term service require from a company that hired you. A lot of freelancer forgot about contract and ended up their long-term became short-term. Client always around to look for a better offer, be it on price or service. I am now writing my contract

Framework

Let’s face it, freelancers always wanted to work on the speed and get more job done than less. Framework is a good start, anything has its own framework, a Word document with nicely formatted, a PSD with guide ready and so on. Previously it took me 3 hours to code a Wordpress theme without a framework. Now, it only take 1 hour

I believe there are more to go, but I did not notice anything at the moment. If you have some idea about it, do share in comment

So, after few days of holidays and eating all the time in this Chinese New Year, I am now officially looking for a diets that work, exercise, more running or any sort of thing. However, let me get something on about the Internet, again – Social Media
I don’t recall any of my friends and relative that don’t know about Facebook. So I jumped into the fire and see what I can get from there.

Facebook fan page

Look in dept about the fan page, it is in the link named “Advertising“, Facebook has already classified Pages as an advertising tool. The last thing you would need to do is to promote the Page using their advertising program, which of course so specific that you can choose country, age, sex and even profession.

Facebook update

The good thing about social media is the news goes faster than satellite. Promotion? Create a heat topic? Teaser ads? All up to the updates. The last thing you need is a psychologist and a good copywriter

Facebook game

It was named as game so users will stays on the page for some times. That is the golden time for the advertiser to advertise anything they wanted. Look at the game you’re clicking in Facebook, do they have some banner shinning in front? That’s how it works, first, create any games, you play it and spare it and everyone looking at it. The con is that game is harder to target into specific group. But it works for the advertiser in long-run.

I am still seeing and research on Facebook. I believe the value of Facebook is on the advertiser and the user database

It’s like another normal day for us Well, not exactly, we just don’t practice on today only, since restaurant raised about 80% of their price, flower too a 100% raise, so we figure sitting at home and spend time together worth more than that

And you, have a great day ahead
