The No’s for freelancer

Eventhough I’ve already registered an office myself, but I still consider myself as a freelance web designer and developer. Nonetheless, like every freelancer encounter, the clients that asked too much. I finally get myself the best fat loss supplement instead of going out for the sport due to this client.

  • Make sure the job brief
The one thing I need to change for now, is the attitude toward a project. I don’t always accept all project, but once I accept a project, I’m too rush to start it and ended up the brief is not clear. So ended up I was like, never ending job request… Add this and add that.
  • Data entry
As a web designer, it is not my job to enter the data from the existing web. Especially I did a CMS system for you to input yourself. 1 to 10 pages are fine though, but more than that is too time taking. While I was wasting my time entering each pages, I actually can get a lot more done.
  • Store email for proof
I always ask my client to email me if we did not meet up when he wanted to brief me. Even if they already brief me on the phone, I would like them to send an email for my backup and proof.

Just some lesson here, hopefully I can remember it myself too :P

Starting point as a freelance

There were some questions asked by my friend who also, just joined into the field of freelancing. However, what he don’t know about freelancing is, there is a lot more to do than just work. For some reason, beginner always sees freelance as a dream job all because it is working at home. Let me break some of the thing with you.

  • Schedule, notes, to-do list
    Notes
All this will be done by yourself. There will be no one helping you on this one, beside being hectic in the day and night job, you still need to take times out for all those little tiny important matters.
  • Insurance, income tax and etc
    Calculator
Everything from personal insurance to health savings account and paying taxes are going to be done yourself too.
  • No claimable items
    Receipt
If you worked under any company that pays you for company expenses, you probably understand what I’m talking about here. As your own job, you going to spend more wisely after this :)

Don’t forget about SOHO

Just when I was using my Ladybug XL steam cleaner cleaning my room and my so-called office. I remembered that there was this term S.O.H.O or Small Office/Home Office.
My workspace
I have been working as a “freelancer” for more than 4 years, it has been quite interesting knowing that people in small town haven’t accept the term “freelancer” or “freelance“. However, tonight happen a great thing, or a great regret for me.

My friend brought me to meet with his friend and they have a little business to do. So my friend introduced me as a web designer. The new guy asked if I work S.O.H.O, then only I remember this term :P The most regret thing was that I don’t have my own personal business namecard :( I must have one soon…

After a months of freelancing

Freelancing has been there for a long time, some claim that it won’t get your a living, but I doubt that. Considering the advantages of working as a freelancer, a lot of people are switching from full time to freelancing.

The reason I take up freelancing is because:

Flexible Working hours

The first thing came into my mind was the time on my hand. If I have any appointment at 10am on Monday morning, I can easily re-schedule my job without needed to get permission from my boss.

Cut off extra expenses

My fuel and road toll are the things that I concern. Imagine paying back and fore everyday with my own fuel when I can now wake up and in my office :)

Be my own boss

I would say the flexibility when working. I don’t have to pass anything from my senior, or some a photographer to choose the photos, I don’t even need to wait for my boss to say “ok”, all by myself :)

My own working environment

I still remember my previous boss, who nagged me about taking off my shoe while on my desk. I mean, I am on my desk and I can’t take off my shoe to let me feet feel more comfortable? Idiot right? Now I get to choose my own style, my style? A short pant, no top, no shoe and a fan :)

No more certificate collection

This is the thing most old folks don’t understand. How can a job interview need no certificate? Well, design field doesn’t require much certificate, but an award winning certificate will surely get you on top fast. I don’t need to sit for GMAT prep to qualify as a freelancer.

At any time when I want to have a short vacation outside my house or state, I can easily pack up and schedule the rest of my job and go. No more letter to be approve or all sort of waiting. However, some people still thinking that working freelancing is not so practical, because the income is not fixed, which may result a month without a salary. But hey, it is the hard work you put in to get the comfortable of yourself :)

The plan is on another changed

Yes, I just joined my girlfriend to the freelance world, and it is somehow tough for me at the moment, to change my lifestyle and all. However, I find it difficult to change a few thing though… And of course there are fun in the freelance world :)

The wearing

Normally I wear only a short pant at home, without top. And now, I’m working without my top. Strange but comfortable of course, at least I don’t need to listen to my boss nagging about I put off my shoes when I’m on my seat. It’s annoying…

More free time

Although I can’t say that my earning has been good, but it is enough for me to survive a month or two already. But I have all the free time on my hand. I don’t need to report anyone if I want to go outside and shop for my Logo usb drive in the afternoon, I can have my lunch for hours and etc :)

More stress

Normally happen only if we did not receive any job for a day or two. Well, it’s going to be over :) As long as motivation is there…. Erm…

Keep motivating myself for long run

I admit I hate to motivate myself, I rather keep myself on a situation where I am productive, which is not easy, especially now I’m at home working…

Anyway, will get more update once I have the time. It’s working hour for me now, and it is also about time for me to get off my desk and have a tea break :)
