Broadband ok and sites down

Bad things just doesn’t finish that early aren’t they? Just when I got back mny broadband, all my sites were keep going down and up.
Error
It has been the 6th years I’m into web field, buying from more than 5 hosting providers, none of them gave me no problem at all. Every once in a while there will be a serious downtime or something funny happen, there must be something happen. I am working on a few websites to build the reputation and traffic, with such a host I don’t know how long can I take it anymore. Not to mention, now I’m with a WordPress specialised hosting provider, they even have problem with overload. To me, it is either the security holes in 2.8.3 WordPress community just find out or the hosting provider hasn’t been really specialise in WordPress server.

Sigh… Got to kick away some free time first… Lot of draft has been done. I guess I’ll have a free time this weekend.

Yet another hosting provider

I don’t know if this was my luck or what, it’s been years I kept on change my host, even I get the most reliable hosting provider from review, it still failed, or maybe not?
Lunarpages
Lunarpages has been giving me a lot of confident that they’re the best and will take good cares of my websites. Thinking that they giving me a coupon for a great discount for 2 years hosting, I head off to join them. With the luck I had previously, I joined their WordPress theme design contest and win some 3 years hosting added in I’ll have 5 years hosting costing for 2 years hosting with discounted price, attractive huh? I was too.

Lately, I have the problem with WordPress engine, since 90% of my sites are using WordPress as the engine. It ended up that my sites with WordPress engine are over using their CPU resources (Which might written on their terms and condition 10-pixel-font-long-paragraph there). Stupid me without reading their terms and conditions. However, I asked for help on cutting down their CPU resources, a reply from them was recommended me some of the hottest WordPress plugins. Even though I installed the recommended plugins, they’re still over using the CPU resources, so I asked for help another time, this time, the reply was… “You’re the webmaster, you should responsible for your websites.” I was like… What the hell is this customer support about?

They should give me an alternative way or a solution. Not giving me the I-don’t-know answer! So I’m on the way testing another hosting provider, but still keeping Lunarpages 5 years contract. I will definitely make a full use of Lunarpages before I’m leaving them 5 years later :P

Choosing a hosting

There’s always problem with finding a hosting. My friend who run a business offline and wanted to have an online e-commerce, he came to me and ask about hosting. I can’t really answer him though, because it’s subjective, but advice is able though. Me as one, who doesn’t really need support most of my time. Some downtime is fine, as long as it doesn’t affect my earning  Anyway, the best way to look for one, these are my-list ;)

1, Your needs
What do you need when you host your website. What is the requirement, large space? Large bandwidth? Also, take account that hosting company is also one of the factor for those, each hosting company don’t just simply host website, some have limited access on script and etc. At the end of the day, you need to plan what you want to do with your web.

2, Reliability and speed
Many hosting company offer you a 99.99% uptime, but it’s not accurate. Don’t think too much about this kinda uptime. However, in order to make sure about their uptime, your monitor is important, try to get some free uptime monitor on the web. Monitor them for a month and make decision, don’t rush. Speed is also a factor for a web. Visitors don’t have patience like you do. There’s a lot of site that offer free bandwidth or speed test on web as well, google them and you’ll get a tons of it. Use them as you use for monitoring the host company as well.

3, Technical support
Test them! This is what I did all the time. Keep asking them question before you buy the host, keep making them busy, and see what they react on you. Many hosting company, some even famous one, run by a bunch of friends only. So they do it for their own, they don’t do it to meet end month pay cheque. Ask them some dump question, and if their site are down, ask them for explanation, even if you’re not their customer.

I’ve been with this hosting company Galaxy Webhosting. It run by bunch of friend or maybe just one man. It’s fine for me so far, it’s been the 3rd or 4th years I’m hosting with him/them. But one thing I don’t have from the list though, technical support! Whenever there’s a downtime, he/they don’t give explanation, no email replied, no support ticket reply as well. That’s why I said, even if you’re not their customer, ask them if you see their site is down! If some perfectionist person hosting with the same hosting company as me, I’m sure acne treatments will be what he needed now. I’m even thinking I’m getting some blood pressure.

Blogger Or Not

There was this same question flowing around the internet and also from my fellow friends about blogging on blogspot or get a domain and host themselves, which is better? My idea as for now, get a domain host in blogspot, end story!

Really! I mean why taking so much hassle working on your own when there is actually a giant (Google) helping you to keep your blogspot blog? Yes, I regret for not doing this, so now I have to keep backup my blog entries and comments and keep my eyes on my hoster for not down timed on me then I need to beware of hackers.
Blogger and WordPress
Why? It’s not all bad to use blogspot, they are well maintained, give you full freedom to change the theme, and everything you need as a blogger, to make you smile a little, they allow pictures and videos upload also, you don’t need to buy an expensive host with more spaces.

Hosting WordPress (Or any other blog script) only to make you look professional, but if you’re just trying to blog for fun or even for money, honestly, get a domain, blogspot is fine, real fine for all that.
