Why I will never buy another Apple product

I am not condemning Apple product right now, but the way Apple running their business and marketing has making me a little bit uncomfortable. I still love their design though, can’t deny Apple has been a design trend creator and a lot others are just follower :)
Apple showtime

Apple hardware and Apple software

Apple product come with such a premium price for a reason. They owe everything including you as well. As long as you buy something from Apple, you will going to get the rest of the product from them, beside of course, the accessories.

One place to get replace

Only authorized Apple reseller has the right and legal document to replace your faulty machine, or just a simple warranty from Apple care. Obviously this limited to big city around the World and not small town in a country. Isn’t it exclusive and expensive? Unlike changing projector headlights where you can get it on most store in town.
Apple products

You are their asset

As soon as you jumped into Apple product, you are their asset. Because you have only one way to go, what do you think they are you to “switch” instead of “getting used”? By taking it one way only, you will become their royalty customer.

Now if you asking me will Linux works this way? I would probably say yes. For me, basically Linux and Apple are both very alike, the only thing lack in Linux was the publicity, which Ubuntu has been working very hard on I believe. That will be another story :)

4 most stupid argument about PC and Mac

This entry might bored you out. You might get angry, and you might feel funny, whatever it may be, I just feels that this should be one interesting thing to know. Been using all three operating system, hearing all sort of argument and agreement. Here are what I find out.
GetaMac

Mac is safe from viruses

Well, it depend how you use the computer. Many of my friends does not have an anti virus program and still happily deleting virus themselves, my brother is one of them. Attacking Windows does not mean Windows is bad, if Microsoft support does not solve this problem, then, it is bad, but they do solve the viruses problem don’t they? Mac is save because the system is different.

Windows can play lots of game

Does those Windows users know that there was this game link on Apple website? Diablo, Age of Empire, SimCity, you name it. Sure not so much game, but still, Mac can play games. The reason behind those game maker to make lots of Windows games because the market they have, not because they don’t like Apple computer.

Mac is all about plug and play

Look into the library, you’ll see a whole list of drivers that you didn’t even know. Mac pre-installed all printers and camera drivers so you don’t need to install. But this, take lots of space away from your hard disk. Windows tried to give you more space instead of wasting those in drivers alone.

Windows is more customisable

Really? How long you with the desktop? If you’re a gamer, I bet you’re playing full screen, no? If you’re Internet geek, I bet the browser is maximized mode, no?

I can list a lot more, but I think I’ll pass. Anyhow, there should be a clear understanding of the marketing of each of them. Mac are more into premium machine, PC is everywhere built-in with Windows.

Mac made the hardware and software themselves, they keep the market forever – Royalty. Every product of Apple is interlinked, so you have an iPod, you’ll need an iTunes, to run iTunes on the best mode get a Mac. To get support from Apple, you’ll have to get to Apple store. Clear enough? Apple building royalty slowly every single day.

Unlike Apple, Microsoft mass market their operating system. They linked themselves with the government (smart move). If your Windows crash, there are thousand of stores outside can assist you. Microsoft doesn’t care that, all they know is to market the product out to the mass, heavy advertisement and etc.

In the end of the day, both are actually running almost the same. The price is the only differences. If price is not your concern, you will definitely get a Mac (that’s why we said Mac fanboy are rich). If you have a budget, go for PC, nothing wrong with both of them anyway.

Just give me a nice box cutter, I am going for PC next :P Budgeting my money these few months. I am going with Ubuntu Linux recently and the upcoming PC will be a Linux machine too!

Ubuntu again

Yes, I’m back nagging about Ubuntu again. This time, it’s both good and bad experience I have had this past 2 days. I finally get the whole system running as I want it to be. I’m going to briefly give a walk-around of how I achieved. What I did were:

  1. Install LAMP
  2. Install multimedia codec
  3. True Typeface

Installing LAMP

Basically Ubuntu (or maybe all Linux distro) run very well with Internet. This is the one thing Windows and Mac cannot achieve. In Ubuntu, anything I want to install, I can simply go to System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager. When Synaptic Package Manager window pop-up, go to Edit -> Mark Packages by Task…, and you’ll see LAMP server, check on it and click ok. Simple as that. Your localhost foldder will be on /var/www/.

Installing multimedia codec

Avi video
Basically all you need to do is to open the files (mp3, avi, wmv you name it) then it will tell you that those are restrict (read: money) codec, however, it allow you to click on “Search” so it can installl the necessary codec for you.

True Typeface

My Ubuntu typeface
Linux don’t go well with Windows and Mac? Think again, until today, some geek friends even tell me that Linux typeface is ugly. So what? You can change the typeface, you can even download font from DaFont and install it on your system and use it as the main typeface. I use Vista typeface for my system though, they seems nice :)

Here is the rough idea of what I thought about previously… I want a Vista user interface, with Macintosh system smoothness and Linux customisation. Am I greedy? Not really, this is just a purely consumer right of thinking

I’ve spend 2 days working purely with Ubuntu only. Working with it on one of the client website installation and one client theme adjustment on Ubuntu. Quite a nice machine I have to say. Heh, company is giving out free New York Yankees tickets tonight. I’m thinking about going or not. Because I just feel too happy in the same time don’t want to leave my Ubuntu at the moment :)

Now that I am experiencing a better in-depth of Ubuntu, I really recommend it if one want to ask for an alternative. Oh, did I mention about I’m blogging with it now? Not to mention, upon the installation, my network all run smoothly, even my Celcom broadband, which need driver for Windows, it just work with Ubuntu and Mac ;)

Ubuntu and Celcom mobile broandband

A whole day exploring and learning of Ubuntu did give me a wider view of open source operating system. This is good, I like how much I can customise with it. I have not yet get myself a meal yet the whole Saturday :? Sometimes, when excitement came appetite suppressant is the only way to help me, as well as some constipation pills. I get these 2 a lot of time. Must adjust my time to suit this whole fulltime + freelance environment…

Anyway, today was good, cause I’m getting a decent learning of Ubuntu from the net and self exploring. Speaking of Internet, I was afraid that Celcom mobile broadband doesn’t work on Ubuntu. It turns out quite impressive. I don’t need to setup anything at all, well, beside choosing country and service provider. It works out of the box with Ubuntu, both my P1 broadband and Celcom doesn’t require me to setup anything at all (I wonder if I call in P1 support and tell them I’m using Ubuntu, how they going to instruct me?).

Anyway, previously I blog about how to force Celcom to do faster connection, I can’t seems to find any non Ubuntu. And yes, it gets slower and faster quite unstable. Now that doubt me about Celcom broadband. I’m not saying I want to cancel it after half month of subscription. It works well in Windows, if I adjust it to WCDMA.

Speaking of Internet, I tested on the download speed by downloading stuff myself  By using P1, I get up to 100KB/s download speed, the first time I experience such a fast connection from Malaysia ISP. The best download speed I get previously in Vista was 48KB/s. However, I don’t know it is the operating system or the mood (of P1) that differ the speed.

Exactly the users

Mac users
This is exactly how Mac users are :) Don’t bash me, I was once a Mac user like them too. Seriously, I think Mac users would have lots of baby shower ideas that can make them think and imagine the power of Mac, when the fact is, Mac = Linux for a non-Mac user mindset.

Ubuntu and Mac has almost the same operating surface, I can easily get used to Ubuntu all thanks to Mac. They even have some similar folder in under the root account. Anyway, being a reverse-Mac-user to PC again, I have to stress this again… They are the same: Computer. Though Vista SP2 proudly announce that they would be the most secure operating system (I know, I know, everybody doubt that), but my experience tells me that they indeed are. So far, I don’t get virus from Internet at all, I set an auto scan for my PC every morning at 6.00am and my PC is as clean as a baby, period.

Really, the war between Mac and PC on the Internet is way polite than the real life. Get 2 of the users together and you’ll see something. That happen very often in my class previously. It’s really tiring :P
